What if a nation could be founded on the principles of self-determination and unused sovereignty? This is the core of Daniel Jackson's project as President of the Free Republic of Verdis.

In this interview, he discusses establishing this innovative state on terra nullius (no man's land), the challenge of Croatia's blockade, and his vision for its future: international recognition, reinhabitation, and a new model of participatory democracy.

Interview with Daniel Jackson

Can you share the story behind the founding of Verdis Government and your role in it?

Verdis was initially started as an experiment, and became a reality in 2018 when we properly formed a government, did cadastral work on the land, and eventually inhabited it - although later invaded by Croatian authorities.

Neither Croatia or Serbia claim the land, both arguing over a larger piece on the other side of the Danube, which left this piece unclaimed.

What inspired you to take on the role of president?

I took the role as President as I was initially the most committed to Verdis. The position is exhausting at times, but I have learnt so much and look forward to being a normal citizen in the future.

What are your main goals for the country during your leadership?

The main goals for my country during citizenship include building international relations with our neighbours, re-inhabiting the country, restarting our country's aid missions, building the economy and of course permanent infrastructure in Verdis.

Which challenges in the country do you consider the highest priority right now?

Our highest priorities include returning to the land, and building international relations.

How do you plan to involve citizens in achieving your vision for the country?

We encourage our citizens to relocate to Verdis once Croatia has lifted their illegal blockade. Citizens are accepted based on their skillset, history and proximity to the country.

What long-term changes do you hope to see in the country under your administration?

I hope to see us back on the land, and later ready to draft a new constitution, and then bring in elections. This will happen after Verdis has been further developed, and is ready to take the next step in nationbuilding.
